Students in Kids Level I Sewing (ages *8-12) practice hand sewing skills while creating several fun and useful projects with introductory fabrics and thread. Lessons will include sewing tool safety, essential hand stitches, marking and cutting fabric, basic measuring and drafting of simple shapes, as well as a teacher-assisted sewing machine tour. Small class sizes ensure personal attention from Sewing Teacher Najah Carroll and focus on supporting individual skill and knowledge building.
Each session throughout the academic year has a different theme, so students will have fresh experiences and build upon their skills each time they enroll. Student Artworks will be selected and on display for Studio Exhibitions throughout the academic year.
Students will be able to choose from variety of Level I projects to make after sewing-as-a-group with the first class project:
- felt needle case
- pin cushion
- personalized stuffie
- drawstring bag or backpack
- pencil case
- embroidered and appliquéd wall hanging
- fleece blanket with pocket
- small accessories
Each new Level I student will need to purchase a basic sewing kit assembled by Monroe Street Studio. The kits will remain in the Studio for the duration of the session and then may be taken home on the last day of the session. Continuing students should remember to bring their basic sewing kit, otherwise they will need to purchase a new kit for use in the class.
*Students age 7 can attend the Kids class if they’ve had prior sewing experience.
