Beginner students in Adult Level I Sewing practice machine & hand sewing skills while creating fun and useful projects. Lessons will include sewing machine anatomy & safe operation, essential hand stitches, fabric properties, marking and cutting fabric, basic measuring and drafting of shapes, machine sewn button holes, basic sewing repairs and garment alterations. Small class sizes ensure personal attention from Sewing Teacher Najah Carroll and focus on supporting individual skill and knowledge building.
Each session throughout the academic year has a different theme, so students will have fresh experiences and build upon their skills each time they enroll. Student Artworks will be selected and on display for Studio Exhibitions throughout the academic year.
Students will be able to choose from variety of beginner-friendly projects to make after sewing-as-a-group with the first class project:
- tools apron
- tote bag
- small accessories
- straight seam garment
- basic sewing repairs
- jeans hemming
Each new Level I student will need to purchase a basic sewing kit assembled by Monroe Street Studio. The kits will remain in the Studio for the duration of the session and then may be taken home on the last day of the session. Continuing students should remember to bring their basic sewing kit, otherwise they will need to purchase a new kit for use in the class. Machines are available for classroom use, or students may opt to bring their own.
