The Art of Henna

Henna, a reddish-brown coloring made from a flowering plant, has been used throughout history to dye skin, hair, fingernails, leather, silk, and wool. Participants in this single-day, three-hour workshop will learn about the history, cultural traditions, and science of henna. Our henna instructor will assist students in selecting and drawing traditional henna designs and patterns, teach effective henna application techniques, and explain proper aftercare.

People in Egypt and India continue to use this form of temporary tattoo for religious ceremonies, wedding festivals, and simple body adornment. Participants in this workshop will each receive a personal henna application on their hand/wrist/arm from the instructor. By registering a student for this workshop, parents/guardians give their permission for their student to receive this henna application and understand that this natural dye, while temporary, will remain on the skin for a week or more. Please browse our gallery to see examples of our Henna Artist’s work.

Applying henna designs to clothing and accessories is a popular and fun way to display the art of henna. Participants may bring accessories of their own, such as scarves, shoes, bags, belts, and purses, to decorate. 100% natural materials, such as silk, leather, cotton, and linen, are the best for taking on and keeping the dye fast.
